8. Reviews and the Verified Badge: Why Strangers Decide to Stop

A review from a happy customer does more than any description you can write. Here is how reviews work, and what the verified badge actually is.

A five-star customer review on a SideStall stall page, with a title and a few lines praising the product.

A buyer looking at two stalls they have never visited is making a small decision with almost no information. Both have photos. Both claim to be good. One has three reviews from real customers.

They go to that one. Not because three is a lot, but because someone else went first.

Reviews, and how to actually get them

Buyers who paid you through the app can leave a star review: stars, their name, a date and their own words, right on your stall page. Someone who paid cash at the gate cannot, so reviews start once you are taking payment in the app. Those reviews help lift you in local search, so being well reviewed makes you more visible, not just more persuasive.

A five-star review on a stall page, showing a title, the customer's words and how long ago it was left.
A review as it appears on a stall page in the app: stars, a title, the buyer's words and when it was left.

Getting them is mostly about asking, at the one moment people are inclined to say yes:

  • Ask at the handover, not later. "If you like it, a review really helps" while the bread is warm in their hands works. The same sentence in a message on Tuesday does not.
  • Ask the regulars first. The people who already come back are the ones who will actually do it.
  • Do not offer anything for it. A discount for a review buys you a review nobody trusts, and it is the sort of thing that quietly damages a small brand.

Five honest reviews will do more for a new stall than any amount of writing about yourself.

The verified badge (Standard)

On the Standard plan, your stall page in the app carries a verified seller badge. Reviews and the badge show in the app, not on the web page you share at sidestall.au/stall/@yourhandle.

Be clear about what it is: a trust signal that appears on your page. It does not unlock features, it does not change how search works, and it is not a substitute for having reviews.

It is worth having for the same reason a tidy sign is worth having: it removes one small reason for a stranger to hesitate.

What this changes

Everything else in this series makes you findable. Trust is what converts being found into someone actually turning off the road.

The order matters, too. Get your first few reviews before you worry about badges: a stall with real words from real customers and no badge beats a badge with an empty page every time.
