Nervous About Your First Farm-Gate Pickup? Here's All That Happens

Every week someone tells me a version of the same thing: they've been eyeing off a farm gate or roadside stall for months and haven't stopped, because they're not quite sure how it works. What if I get there and do the wrong thing? What if I have to make conversation? What if there's a dog?

So here, in full, is what happens at a farm-gate pickup.

The whole experience

1. You pre-order in the app, and either pay by card or pay the seller when you collect.
2. You drive up. There's usually a sign, and your order is packed and set aside waiting for you.
3. You wave. You say g'day. You take your box.
4. You wave again and drive home with the best eggs you've had in years.

That's it. If you pre-ordered, you read out the four-digit code from your order screen and take your box. At an honesty box there's nobody to talk to at all. Honesty boxes and pickup shelves run on the idea that nobody needs to hover over you while you collect your own vegetables. If you're not a big talker, this whole economy was built for you.

The three worries, answered

“What if I do it wrong?” You can't. If the stall takes pre-orders, the seller has your order ready and waiting. If it's an honesty stall, the instructions are on the tin, usually literally.

“Do I need the right change?” If you paid by card in the app, it's already done. If you chose to pay at collection, or it's a cash stall, the price list is on the table and you settle up at the gate. No one's ever been judged at a farm gate for paying in gold coins.

“What if there's a dog?” There's often a dog. Most of them are friendly and very much part of the experience.

Open the app, find the closest stall to you, and do one pickup this week. The second one will feel like routine. By the third, you'll have a favourite.
