Nervous About Your First Farm-Gate Pickup? Here's All That Happens

Every week someone tells me a version of the same thing: they've been eyeing off a farm gate or roadside stall for months and haven't stopped, because they're not quite sure how it works. What if I get there and do the wrong thing? What if I have to make conversation? What if there's a dog?

So here, in full, is what happens at a farm-gate pickup.

The whole experience

1. You pre-order in the app. It's paid for before you leave the house.
2. You drive up. There's usually a sign, and your box is packed with your name on it.
3. You wave. You say g'day. You take your box.
4. You wave again and drive home with the best eggs you've had in years.

That's it. Total required human interaction: one g'day, and even that's optional at plenty of stalls. Honesty boxes and pickup shelves run on the idea that nobody needs to hover over you while you collect your own vegetables. If you're not a big talker, this whole economy was built for you.

The three worries, answered

“What if I do it wrong?” You can't. If the stall takes pre-orders, your name is on a box. If it's an honesty stall, the instructions are on the tin, usually literally.

“Do I need the right change?” If you pre-ordered in the app, it's already paid. If it's a cash stall, the price list is on the table. No one's ever been judged at a farm gate for paying in gold coins.

“What if there's a dog?” There's often a dog. The dog is friendly. The dog is part of the experience.
